Aliquot Parts Legal Definition

The main purpose of a legal description is to describe a particular property in a way that describes only that property in a unique way, without being ambiguous (vague). It is also important that the legal description survives over time or is written in such a way that the legal description does not depend on elements that may not be available in the future. In the United States, the most common methods of describing land are by reference to a lot and/or block within an existing subdivision, by aliquot description, by metes and boundaries, or by a combination thereof. These are also recursive, so a small piece of land can be defined as in the northeast SE or in the northeast corner of the southeast corner of a larger section. It is important to note that there are some differences in the BLM documentation of aliquots where some claims have a list such as “NESE” that defines a part in a part, while for other types of claims, this can define two different parts that together define the entire claim.
